More than 5 a Day. . .Launching our new Brand

Moderator:  Desiree Backman, Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section, California Department of Health Services

Dave Parker, Director of Marketing for Fruit Patch Sales, and Joint Steering Committee Co-chair 1993-2002(Developing a New Brand Identity)

Bob McKinnon, Founder, YELLOWBRICKROAD (The Path to Change)

5 a Day is undergoing a major transformation to update the brand and strengthen the fruit and vegetables movement nationwide!  The 5 a Day re-branding process began with the release of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which called for increased fruit and vegetable consumption, above the original 5 a Day goal set in 1988.  The re-branding is a joint national effort by members of the National 5 a Day Partnership and fruit and vegetables industry, including the Produce for Better Health (PBH) Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United States Department of Agriculture. Dave Parker, former PBH Executive Chairman and Co-Chair of the Network Joint Steering committee, will describe the process which led up to the development of our new brand.  Bob McKinnon of YELLOWBRICKROAD will remind us that like the characters in the Wizard of Oz, there exists within each of us the intelligence, courage and heart to achieve the unimaginable—even in the challenging world of fruits and vegetables.

4:45 pm – 5:15 pm
“The Second Ten Years. . .There’s Much More in our Future”
Susan B. Foerster, Chief, Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section, California Department of Health Services

To conclude the day, Ms. Foerster will present her vision for the Network over the next ten years.  As part of her address, she will describe the statewide launch of our new brand tentatively planned for March 2007.

Youth Empowerment Training

Jennifer Gong, PhD
Executive Director, Youth in Focus

Elyna Montoya Cespedes, BA
Co-Senior Program Manager, Youth in Focus Central Valley

Spenta Kandawalla, BA
Senior Program Manager, Youth in Focus

In this training, youth empowerment principles will be reviewed, and participants will be given the tools to engage, involve and empower young people in an effort to create a healthier California.  Youth-led models have yielded great success in other public health arenas, including tobacco control and violence prevention work.  You will learn how to apply these "lessons learned" to your work in nutrition and physical activity.  Involving youth in the design, implementation and evaluation of nutrition and physical activity programs creates a greater willingness by youth to embrace the services and messages of the program, and lends credibility to the organization sponsoring the project.

What works? Appreciating the Impact of Nutrition Education in CA
Andy Fourney
, DrPH
Evaluation Specialist II, Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section, California Department of Health Services

Storytelling is a powerful way of giving life to the numbers that quantify the impact of public health interventions, including nutrition education. In this session, Network contractors that have participated in the impact evaluation will describe findings and share stories that gave rise to the results of their impact evaluation. Fundamental evaluation concepts will be woven into the stories and statistics to provide a foundation for understanding the principles of evaluation. There will be a demonstration and display of tools available that facilitate impact evaluation. This workshop is for all contractors. Participants will benefit from sharing and listening to stories and contribute to the interpretation of findings.
